Differentiating left and right can be difficult for kids! It makes sense to teach left and right first with the body, as many parts have a left and right (hands, feet, ears, etc.). Most commonly, kids are using their hands for left and right tasks in the early years (i.e., forming dominance in one writing hand). When teaching left and right, a major issue to hone in on is the viewer's orientation. As we know from sources on child development like Piaget, perspective-taking is also a challenging task for most children in the early years. This packet attempts to isolate and work on left vs. right by focusing on orientation, scaffolding, and independent practice. *Please note that only you can determine if your students are ready developmentally to tackle the sole down orientation in left and right conceptualization.
